Description

Client

The client is a global IT services provider working with public and private sector organizations managing their mission-critical business processes and the underlying IT systems. An FTSE 250 company, the client employs 50,000 people across the globe.

Business Goal

The client’s data infrastructure environment was fragmented. It comprised multiple servers in 3 datacenters located across the UK. This made database management complex and expensive. Business growth with a parallel growth in data volumes was leading to a degradation of business-critical applications; the cost of managing fragmented infrastructure needed to be optimized; and data security risks associated with legacy, out-of-support SQL Server instances needed to be addressed.

Microland Solution

After an in-depth study of the client’s database environment, a consolidation strategy was put in place to compress 30 database instances to 15. This would help reduce database complexity and the cost of management. Microland then leveraged industry best practices to design and implement an efficient plan to seamlessly migrate the existing database environment to the latest version, ensuring minimal business disruptions and risks in the process. The plan helped accelerate future state transformation in just 60 business days.

The Microland team also provided key suggestions for the implementation of a high availability Disaster Recovery (DR) solution to improve data availability and ensure business continuity in case of a disaster.

The client’s technology landscape included:

  • Business critical database environment of 30+ SQL Server instances
  • Complex technology implementations including AlwaysOn and Clustering

Business Outcomes

Microland’s approach ensured seamless database consolidation and migration. The business benefits delivered include:

  • 99.99% database availability
  • Minimized operational risks caused by legacy SQL database instances
  • 30% performance improvement of business-critical applications
  • 35% reduction in database spends
  • ~65% reduction in resource effort for managing databases
