Inauguration of Modernized Male Inpatient Ward at Government Lawley Hospital, Coonoor by District Collector, Renovated by Microland Foundation.

Marking another milestone in strengthening public healthcare access in the Nilgiris, the modernized Male Inpatient Ward at Government Lawley Hospital was inaugurated today by the District Collector of the Nilgiris.

The initiative builds on the ongoing transformation of the historic heritage hospital through a sustained public-private partnership focused on improving patient quality of patient experience, enhanced dignity, accessibility, and timely recovery. Driven through collaborative efforts with like-minded stakeholders and supported by Microland Foundation, the initiative reflects a shared commitment toward strengthening inclusive and compassionate public healthcare in the Nilgiris. Previous interventions by Microland Foundation at Lawley Hospital have included the modernization of the Outpatient Department (OPD), establishment of the Nilgiris’ first dialysis unit, and renovation of the Female Inpatient Ward.

The newly upgraded Male Inpatient Ward has been reimagined to create a more inclusive, patient-centric, and responsive healing environment. The renovation includes improved roofing, flooring, lighting, electrical infrastructure, upgraded toilets, skid-proof flooring for elderly and Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), caregiver spaces, better patient beds, nurse support systems, and protective mesh installations, bringing the hospital infrastructure up to speed with modern patient-care considerations while preserving the character of the heritage building.

Over the past year, Lawley Hospital has witnessed a significant increase in utilisation and institutional capacity, with OPD footfall now reaching over 650 patients per day and diagnostic investigations increasing sharply. The number of doctors at the hospital has increased significantly to meet growing patient demand, while deliveries, surgeries, screenings, and inpatient admissions have all shown substantial growth. Patients are now travelling from multiple blocks across the Nilgiris for treatment, reflecting growing confidence in the public healthcare system.

Speaking on the occasion, Pradeep Kar, Chairman, Microland Limited, said:

Our commitment to the Nilgiris goes beyond infrastructure creation. We believe public healthcare systems must deliver world-class experiences rooted in dignity, accessibility, and measurable outcomes. The transformation at Lawley Hospital demonstrates how focused partnerships, strong performance indicators, and patient-centric thinking can strengthen trust in government healthcare institutions and create lasting community impact.”

The District Collector of the Nilgiris added:

Lawley Hospital today stands as an epitome of effective public-private partnership in the hills. Its consistent recognition as the No. 1 hill-area hospital reflects the dedication of healthcare teams and the value of sustained collaboration. Most importantly, this transformation is making quality government healthcare more accessible, trusted, and people-centric, to the extent that patients are now willingly choosing and transferring to a government hospital for treatment.”

The initiative is part of Microland Foundation’s broader efforts to strengthen healthcare access, preventive care, and health outcomes for underserved communities across the Nilgiris.
