IDC : The Journey to Telco SD-WAN Managed Services

Over the past decade, as enterprises have gradually embraced the cloud as a destination for their applications, the traditional enterprise wide area network (WAN) architecture has had to evolve to address the new requirements of the multicloud era. SD-WAN also represents a compelling opportunity for communication service providers (SPs) to expand their portfolio of enterprise-focused value-added managed services and, most importantly, to improve their customer centricity via a new software-defined and software-controlled service that is significantly compelling to their enterprise customers.

SD-WAN can be a key enabler to an enterprise customers' journey to digital transformation (DX). Based on a software-defined architecture, SD-WAN managed services bring a plethora of advantages that translate into service agility, optimized access to cloud applications, improved performance, and easier management of the enterprise network. The software-defined cloud-managed characteristics of the managed service allows communication SPs to address changing customer requirements more dynamically — in effect improving customer centricity, which is a primary objective of digital transformation. This customer centricity is a strong benefit long term for communication SPs, given its potential to improve customer retention in an increasingly competitive communication SP market environment. This white paper outlines the communication SP journey to SD-WAN, key benefits that accrue from SD-WAN, and how VMware can help accelerate a communication SP's journey to managed SD-WAN services.
