Microland Digital Warriors | 31 © MICROLAND LIMITED 2020. Internal Circulation Only 30 From L1 to L3 and now in the exciting world of automation Gayathri was once an L1 engineer. She understands the L1 pain. She is also an example of what an L1 engineer can become given time, assistance and motivation. Now, as an L3 technical resource, Gayathri has automated the server build process for a customer in the UK. For an L1 engineer that is a 4 to 5 hour task for each server. Multiply that by an average of 12 servers a month and you know the process is ripe for automation. “As an L1, I always wanted to do other tasks like operations and troubleshooting. But there was no time,” says Gayathri. She knew she had to do something for her L1 colleagues, so she built an automation tool using Microsoft SCORCH, showcased it to the client and the idea was approved. Now, her L1 colleagues have free time which they can use to study and progress towards becoming L3 engineers. Gayathri had to study and acquire scripting knowledge to build the automated server build tool. But with success, she became so enthusiastic that you could occasionally find her asking folks at Microland if they would like some of their processes automated! Of course, with COVID-19, she can no longer chit-chat with them at their desk and uncover processes that need her attention. But she is using the lockdown as an opportunity to upgrade her skills. She has enrolled for an Azure and a GCP course and, at the moment, can’t make up her mind which one to do. By December, however, she wants to be certified in one of the two technologies. “Microland is good because of the professional progress we can make and the salary structure,” she says, “But I can’t say I miss going to office.” Gayathri loves working from home. She hasn’t spent so much time with her husband, who also works from home for an AI start up, for as long as she can remember. On the other hand, she also loves to hang out with colleagues. This means she is stuck in a dilemma: Should she go back to office or just go remote? Only time will tell. Gayathri P Nayak This Digital Warrior was responsible for the automation of the entire server build process, thereby significantly improving the throughput of the server build. She also contributed valuably to a number of other automation initiatives.”
