Internal Circulation Only 14 Digital and the inordinate power of simplicity Amarnath has a modest credo: If digital technology can make something simple, why not make it simple? It saves time. It saves effort. Everyone is happy. He also knows the value of digital more intimately than most others. In his previous job with a startup he worked on a payment gateway. Initially he didn’t like that much but had no option other than to go digital (eat your own dog food type compulsions!). Now he lives a completely cashless life, and loves every moment of digital simplicity. So when the requirement for an Automated DNS Provisioning Systems (ADPS) came up from the DNS team, he and a colleague raised their hands and cornered the project. “Actually,” says Amarnath light heartedly, “There were only two of us as developers!” They went about the job of collecting the requirements and workflow. And six months later, with a colleague contributing to the UI part, the ADPS was ready. The ADPS solves an unusual problem for the client who has requesters who want a domain to be registered in the domain server. The request goes to the domain team and the domain owner who has to approve. Mails fly around just to include a simple A Record – which is the most fundamental type of DNS data used to point domains to an IP address. Amarnath’s application takes the requesters query and filters everything with the back-end DNS server. It checks that the requester has permission and implementation happens in 6 hours. If the request needs approval, a mail goes to the approver who has to simply hit an “Approve” or “Reject” button in the mail. This used to take up to 72 hours before Amarnath’s application kicked in. But a simple self-service solution changed that. To create the app, Amarnath taught himself to use tools like RabbitMQ, Celery and Flask framework. Now the app can be deployed elsewhere with a few tweaks. But most encouraging of all, says Amarnath, his success has motivated others around him to work on digital projects and in making digital happen. Amarnath’s unwinds with a simple combination of movies and self-learning. Amarnath Sivanathan This Digital Warrior is the architect of the Automated DNS Provisioning System (ADPS) that revolutionized GE’s ability to crunch implementation time from 72 hours to 6 hours. ADPS was designed to be a complete self-service solution.”
